Boating & Jet Skiing in USA Florida Vacation Rental
Boating and jet skiing are mentioned by vacationers in the same breath as the stunning beaches when they’re asked what the highlights of their trip to Florida—places like Cape Coral or Fort Myers—were. Like the gondola ride in Venice, taking out a rented powerboat or jet ski is part of every Florida vacation. Not only adventure seekers have countless opportunities to explore along the Florida Keys—and the best part: you don’t even need a boating license; a regular driver’s license is enough!
Florida Boating License
A boating license is not required—you simply need to have a valid driver’s license. If you were born after January 1, 1988, you need a “Florida Boating Safety Identification Card,” which you can complete here online. The course is also suitable for inexperienced boating newcomers, since you’ll learn safety rules, right-of-way rules, etc. The cost is $29.95 (no charge if you don’t pass). After completing it, you’ll immediately receive a temporary printout (valid for 4 weeks)—the actual card will then be mailed to you.
What you should keep in mind when boating in Florida
- Before every trip, be sure to check the weather
- Boats don’t have brakes—reduce speed early, possibly using reverse
- Follow the rules of the waterway and pay attention to posted signs
- Use the waterways marked with red and green signs, as there are many depth changes—keep an eye on the depth finder!
- In the canals, “No Wake” applies (idle speed). In “Manatee Zones,” you may only travel slowly to avoid injuring the manatees.
- Check the fuel gauge regularly—boats have very high fuel consumption!
- Boating under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offense!
- Do not throw any trash into the water!
- Bring enough drinks, a hat, and sunscreen—the sun exposure on the water is significantly stronger.
Equipment on board
Even if the boat rental company provides the equipment, it doesn’t hurt to check the instruments provided—legally, the operator is liable for violations.
- An audible warning device (horn)
- Visual distress signals for offshore waters
- Fire extinguisher
- Life jackets for children under 6 years old
- Signal lights
- Ventilated engine compartment and fuel tank
- Smoke detector for inboard engines
Boating in Florida – Legal requirements
In the USA, violations of applicable regulations are punished very strictly:
- Failing to report damage to your boat or damage to others, as well as leaving the scene, is a criminal offense.
- Operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs (0.08 BAC for those 21 and older) as well as reckless operation is prohibited.
- Entering protected areas is prohibited.
- Operating without a boat license or Safety ID is a criminal offense.
- Violating rental company requirements can result in civil liability claims—absolutely no operating under 14 years old!
