Anyone traveling to the United States should be aware that the country uses a different electrical system than Europe.

The electrical system in the USA is only 110–120 volts (Europe: 230–240 V). The frequency is different as well: 60 Hz instead of 50 Hz. And the plugs have a different shape.

Tip: There is a label on the device, e. g., “110V–240V”. If this range is listed, an adapter is enough. Some devices must be switched manually.

Plug types in the USA

Travel plug adapter for USA Florida
  • NEMA-1 / Type A: Two flat, parallel prongs
  • NEMA-2 / Type B: Two flat prongs plus a round grounding pin
  • NEMA-6: For large appliances (air conditioners, washing machines) with 240 V

Voltage converter Europe – USA

Voltage converter for USA Florida

If your device is not suitable for 110 V, you will need a voltage converter:

  • Converter – for electrical appliances (hair dryer, curling iron)
  • Transformer – for electronic devices (laptop, chargers)
Important: A grounded plug must never be used with a flat-plug adapter – then there is no protection anymore! Buy adapters and voltage converters while you are still in Europe.

Devices that work without any issues

Most modern electrical devices (smartphones, laptops, cameras, shavers) are produced for both markets and accept 110–240 V. For these devices, a simple plug adapter is sufficient.
