When is it considered a hurricane?

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that must reach at least hurricane force (wind force 12, starting at 118 km/h (73 mph)). Only cyclones in the North Atlantic are called hurricanes— in the Indian Ocean they are called cyclones, and in Asia they are called typhoons.

Fortunately, most cyclones do not reach land at full strength, but weaken over the ocean.

When is hurricane season in Florida?

The official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Most hurricanes make landfall in the months of July through September. A vacation is still possible during this time of year—you should simply be prepared for wetter weather and keep an eye on local weather services.

Hurricane forecast and news

Tropical cyclones build up slowly over the ocean and can be easily monitored by the National Hurricane Center. Warnings are broadcast via radio, local and national TV, as well as dedicated weather channels. There are also special apps with an “I am safe” feature.

During a hurricane in a vacation rental home

Anyone staying in a vacation rental home in Florida should take precautions:

  • Find out which zone you are in and what evacuation areas there are
  • Contact the owner or agency
  • Follow radio announcements
  • Put together an emergency kit
  • When announced: lock and seal windows and openings
  • Go to a small, low-lying room with four solid walls
  • After the first lull, don’t go outside right away—another storm may follow

Good to know about hurricane season

Some of the more severe disasters of recent decades include Charley (2004), Katrina (August 2005), Wilma (2005), and Matthew (2016). Thanks to modern technology, warnings can be issued early.
